Student Profiles

Tanzania Education Fund. (TEF) provides scholarships to orphans and other needy students.  The yearly tuition is $600.  Each orphan and sponsor is connected through TEF, and pen-pal correspondence is possible.

An incentive partial scholarship program is well established for excellence in science, math, arts and A/B average.  The students receive a reduction in tuition.  TEF gave17 partial scholarships in 2007.

Read the stories of some students on full scholarship:

CHUMA HUSSEINI, 22, an orphan, missed several years of school between primary and secondary school due to a lack of money.  He lives with his grandmother, 2 younger sisters and 1 brother on a small rice farm, which is the family’s sole source of income.  He likes to play soccer and the drums.  His best subjects are physics, math and chemistry.  He wants to be President of Tanzania one day, inspired by the current President, who lived in Bagamoyo.

EDINA KYANDO, 20, has no immediate family members.  She has been on scholarship all five years at Nianjema, and she has been at the top of her class every year.  She needs glasses for her schoolwork, but the expense of the glasses strains her financial resources.  For several years, she lived with the headmaster’s family.  Edina likes to sing and play the drums and finds the Nianjema school life her sole source of encouragement.

SUKURU SEIF, 20, is entering his sixth and last year at Nianjema.  He is an orphan, who has struggled academically to stay in school.  After his fourth year, he did not pass the strenuous national exams.  Although living on the streets for a year, he managed to be tutored, retook the exams, passed and returned to Nianjema on a scholarship.  Sukuru has become a leader in the school debates and is an active and effective chairman.  Sukuru is very serious about graduating next year.
